Bargue Drawings Part I

I have mentioned in a previous entry that I was keen on doing Bargue drawings for practice. The Barge drawing course by Charles Bargue is a compilation of plates on statues, and art by the old masters. Art students needed to copy these exactly to get better at drawing. I’m spending my vacation on getting my basics straightened out.

Prior to this drawing, I’ve spent three days of art, film, and food with one lovely Bianca Lesaca (whose art you should totally check out). And while we were drunk on Fred Astaire and college curry, we managed to haul ourselves to do some art exercises. I had digital copies of the original plates, and she ported them on to the TV for us to draw. Pretty much an amazing evening.

So far, nothing extremely accurate to what I’m copying. I did the proportions by eye with a cross-axis. It would’ve looked better with a well-constructed grid. I really want to work on a serious Bargue piece as soon as I find large sheets of suitable drawing paper.

Wow, I’ve always been fascinated with classical art; and my perception of anatomy has always been embarrassingly flawed… this is an awesome way to address both! I should try doing this too :D You did a beautiful job, by the way!

I am a bit of a baroque sculpture fangirl so venetian busts and statues were always my thing. Learning sculpture does help address anatomy issues, but I wouldn’t recommend it if you’re trying to draw women. Michelangelo for example used male models for his female paintings and just gave them boobs :| This applies to some sculptors too back in the day. So this course mostly helps you with your sighting and sense of proportion

I doubt that your anatomy is embarrassingly flawed! Your line art is always so well drawn :)

I really admire your patience for these things (studies) kasi ako parati walang gana magpractice. It takes a lot of self butt dragging to get me to practice so gurl, how do you do it? I think all of these are magnificent.

I haven’t replied to your previous entry on my exhibit. I was telling Jin last week na I don’t know what to say. Sobrang nakakatouch siya. I’m really happy na nachempo na nandito ka on the opening night. The night won’t be complete without you. :) It dawned on me, just now, that I wouldn’t get into art in high school if it weren’t for you and your anime drawings (hehe!) I think we go a long way! I hope we get to see each other before you leave.

Sa totoo lang I used to be super tamad in doing these things. I didn’t see the point. Until I read these quotes kasi relating to art school. It goes something like this:

“There’s a lot of what seems to be boring busy-work at first- gray scales to paint, design problems to solve and they will really feel beneath you. But remember that Monet made magic from painting haystacks over and over. There are no boring assignments, only boring artists that haven’t taken the concept to another level.”

Not saying that my studies are revolutionary or anything, but I try to find the fun and enthusiasm for it. Nagaganahan ako until it becomes something I like to do.

As for the other entry, I meant every word of it :) Kasi naman marami tayong pinagdaanan ng sakit, away, at art drama sa ating buhay, it kind of makes my heart skip whenever I think about how far we’ve gone and where we come from. I wouldn’t miss your exhibit for anything. And I would never have gotten better at anything if we hadn’t grown up together. I respect, cherish and remember that.

Sana nga we get to see each other before I leave ;-; I’m trying to free up more time. huhuhu.
